Painting Conservation Internship

During the fall semester of 2018, I had the opportunity to participate as an intern in painting conservation at Winterthur Museum's Painting Conservation Studio under the supervision of Dr. Joyce Hill Stoner. Throughout the internship, I worked on multiple projects and improved my conservation hand-skills. My projects included:

  • Preparing a sealed-package pressure mount for the display and storage of a shattered silk flag.

  • Inpainting the losses and plaster fills of a fire-damaged frame using Golden PVA paints.

  • Inpainting the losses of a Thai wood-panel painting using aquazol-based Core Colors paints.

  • Conducting a condition report of a painting.

  • Creating an annotated bibliography on the field of painting conservation.

The skills I learned and improved upon in this internship included:

  • Loss compensation & inpainting

  • Frame-felting

  • Analysis of a painting under different types of illumination

  • Conducting a thread count of a canvas

  • Writing a condition report

  • Photographic documentation

  • Consolidating loose paint
